Father of Red Sox Top Draft Pick Faces Charges in New Jersey

The father of 2016 Red Sox top draft pick Jay Groome, 43-year-old Jason Joseph Groome, has been arrested and charged with drug and weapons violations in New Jersey.Authorities apprehended Groome on Monday at approximately 4:30 PM near the Gunning River Mall in Barnegat Township. The arrest was part of a three-month joint operation by the New Jersey State Police and Ocean County Prosecutor's Office.
Groome, a resident of Barnegat Township, made his first appearance in Ocean County Court on Tuesday. The charges against him include possession of cocaine, possession of prescription drugs without a prescription, and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Jay Groome, who was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 12th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, is currently a minor league pitcher in the San Diego Padres organization. He is considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball.
